Bowie, MD—The Bowie City Council, spearheaded by Mayor Pro Tem Dufour Woolfley, has unanimously proclaimed "Education and Sharing Day in the City of Bowie". With a growing youth mental health crisis and crisis of purpose, Education and Sharing Day seeks to highlight the critical need for moral and ethical education. Dufour Woolfley presented this year's Education and Sharing Day proclamation to representatives of Chabad of Bowie at a ceremony on April 6, 2026.

The proclamation stated in part:

Education & Sharing Day is observed each year on the Rebbe's birthday in recognition of his outstanding and lasting contributions toward the improvement of education, morality, and acts of charity around the world; a day to pause and reflect on our responsibility to ensure our youth have the foundation necessary to lead lives rich in purpose and fulfillment through service and good works.

Some programs encouraged nationwide on Education and Sharing Day include a daily moment of silence – when students are encouraged to think and meditate about what their parents taught them at the beginning of a school day, helping to focus them toward greater moral awareness – and the ARK (Acts of Random/Routine Kindness) initiative that encourages daily charitable giving and sharing.

Education and Sharing Day honors the contributions of the Rebbe – Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of blessed memory – who emphasized the role of character building and ethical development in education, stressing the importance of personal responsibility and upstanding, principled behavior. Since its establishment in 1978, Education and Sharing Day has been renewed annually by each president, as well as by cities, states and counties around the USA, which issue proclamations recognizing the need to teach moral and ethical values to our youth.

"Education must be more than factual enlightenment—it must enrich the character as well as the mind," said President Ronald Reagan in his 1982 proclamation for the day, echoing the Rebbe's teachings.

This is the first year that Bowie, MD has issued an Education and Sharing Day proclamation, reinforcing the importance of ethical and moral development for the next generation.
