BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie Senior Center often relies on volunteers to provide a range of activities, from bingo to blood pressure checks.
The center's volunteers put in 20,000 hours a year minimum, said David Hackenberg, a senior center board member and volunteer. "On an annual basis, if the city had to pay wages for those volunteer hours, they couldn't afford it," he said, adding that volunteering is satisfying.
It is one of the few senior centers in the state funded entirely by taxes as opposed to membership dues or grants, Bowie Sun video journalist Brandon Smith reports. Watch the video:
