Hidden Figures is the true story of black women mathematicians at NASA who catapulted the U.S. to dominance in the space race, according to HiddenFigures.com. The movie begins at dusk, around 9 p.m.

The critically acclaimed movie kicks off Bowie's first-ever Juneteenth celebration, a three-day affair that includes a sunrise walk, family bike ride, outdoor concerts and other performances. Check the city website or YouTube page for details.

Although the occasion has been celebrated for years among African-American communities in Texas, Juneteenth has gained in popularity in recent years with the increased attention on social justice issues. Last year, it became a national holiday and the city of Bowie issued a proclamation to officially observe Juneteenth.

The holiday commemorates the day when federal troops freed 250,000 enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, in June 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. For more information, view the Juneteenth video on the city's YouTube page.
