Filmmakers and animators will be on hand for the Dec. 8 launch of a new stop-motion animation studio at Bowie State University.
To mark the studio launch, there will be a special evening screening of LAIKA Studio's Golden Globe-winning animated film Missing Link. Register for the movie screening on Eventbrite.
The screening will culminate with the launch of the new stop-motion animation studio that honors Dr. Ayoka Chenzira of Spelman College, the first African American female animator. She is one of a handful of Black experimental filmmakers expected to be in attendance.
The campus studio was provided through a partnership with Oregon-based LAIKA. One of the leading animation studios in the film industry, LAIKA's five films have all been nominated for Academy Awards. Bowie State University is the only institution of higher learning in the state of Maryland with a stop-motion animation studio.
Throughout the day, Bowie state students will take part in animation workshops. In the evening, LAIKA head of animation Brad Schiff and costume designer Deborah Cook will take part in a panel discussion after the screening.
