Catherine Hollingsworth founded the Bowie Sun digital newspaper in 2021 with a micro-grant from the Google News Initiative. The former Washington-based journalist formed the community news site out of a sense of urgency after a hedge fund closed the 41-year-old Bowie Blade-News.
The longtime resident of Prince George’s County has a deep knowledge of the community as a former Bowie Star reporter and past volunteer for local organizations. She has over a decade of experience covering local, regional and national news. Her articles have appeared in the New York Times Regional Newspapers, Gazette and newsletters published by Bloomberg BNA (formerly BNA).
Prior to launching The Bowie Sun, Catherine worked as a writer/editor for government agencies and Fortune-500 firms.
Catherine is a former Freedom Forum-Paul Miller Washington Reporting Fellow and holds a master's degree in journalism from Michigan State University, where she covered state government as a student reporter for Capital News Service. A native of Michigan, she earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan.
She has enjoyed mentoring Bowie Sun interns from Prince George's Community College, historically black Bowie State University and the University of Maryland Local News Network.
